It’s one of the easiest ports for independent travel thanks to abundant taxis and operators right outside the pier. Taxis are regulated by the government and are very safe. They are a little pricey ($15-$25) to the private beaches. They accept usd cash, so no need to exchange to Mexican pesos.

Best Shore Excursions in Costa Maya (Mahahual)
A former sleepy fishing village on the southern Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in Quintana Roo, Mexico. Costa Maya feels more relaxed and less commercial. The port area has pools and shops, but the real gems are a short drive away.

- Chacchoben Mayan Ruins. I wanted to see the ruins, and the tour didn’t disappoint. These well-preserved ruins are less crowded than Tulum or Chichen Itza. You can climb up the pyramids, learn from knowledgeable guides, and enjoy the jungle setting, with monkeys flying overhead! Tours often combine with a beach break. ~$90–$135 pp or a couple of hours at Bacalar Lagoon. You have plenty of time to do both, and the guides know to get you back to the ship on time.
- Mahahual Beach or Beach Clubs. Relaxed vibe with snorkeling right off the shore. Look for day passes at places like YaYa Beach Club.
- Bacalar Lagoon (7 Colors Lagoon). This was a pleasant stop for lunch and a quick swim in the turquoise waters of the lagoon. Kayaks are also provided.
About 45 – 60 minutes from the port, the Chacchoben ruins are definitely a must-see for history enthusiasts. It’s pyramidal temples tell the stories of these ancient people. Nestled in the jungle canopy, only a portion of the site has been excavated. Chacchoben and the Mayan civilization is older than the Aztec and the Inca civilizations. It reached it’s peak around 900 AD.
Best Shore Excursions in Roatan, Honduras
Roatan is the largest of Honduras’ Bay Islands. The reef off Roatan is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. It is the second-largest barrier reef system in the world, after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Its beautiful beaches and turquoise waters are spectacular. And it’s great for snorkeling and wildlife. I’ve wanted to snorkel around the reef, and it was such a wonderful experience; I highly recommend it.

- Sloth & Monkey Sanctuaries. The animals in these sanctuaries are not all native to Roatan, but it’s a great couple of hours to observe monkeys, sloths, and other animals at play. You still have plenty of time to combine snorkeling with this excursion as well.
