travel tips and resources pci

I’m old enough to remember handwriting airline tickets and sending hotel reservations through the telex machine.

Thank goodness, travel planning has changed. Travel resources that are available online make your travel planning super easy, while giving you many options to choose from.

As I age, I find that I enjoy the structure and safety of escorted tours, and at other times, I just enjoy slow traveling, building my own itinerary and lingering in the one spot that holds my interest longer than others.

Whatever the case, today’s tools make it easier than ever to craft the exact trip that matches your energy, your interests, and your perfect pace.

Today I’m sharing the travel tips and resources I personally use and love, the ones that make my trips easy to plan and enjoy safely.

I’ve listed them alphabetically so they’re easy to access. Feel free to click anytime you’re dreaming, planning, or ready to book your next adventure.

Best Travel Planning Tools for Seniors on a Budget

I always begin with trusty tools that save time and money.

  • TripAdvisor– It’s comforting to read honest reviews from other seniors about hotels, attractions, and restaurants. It highlights accessibility features (wheelchair-friendly entrances, low-mobility options) so clearly.
  • Skyscanner: I use Skyscanner to check for cheap flights and flexible dates. Set price alerts and when the price drops, I start checking the airlines’ sites as well. Airlines have senior citizen discounts, but you have to call them, they’re usually not advertised.

Top Booking Sites for Comfortable Accommodations

  1. Booking.com: Filters for ground-floor rooms, elevators, and senior-friendly properties make it a breeze. Flexible free cancellations on many places, plus their loyalty program gives up to 15% off. Super easy app too-book as you go! Narrow choices with filters and Google Maps for the perfect location.
  2. Hotels.com – Collect free nights after 10 stays, transparent pricing (taxes & fees included, no nasty surprises), and sometimes upgrades or flexible check-in/out. Great range from cozy budget spots to lovely treats.
  3. Vrbo– Wonderful for long-stay vacation rentals and home-like comfort. Many hosts happily offer senior discounts.

Cruises
Unpack once, meals prepared, evening entertainment, friendly cabin steward, new friends at dinner.

eSIMs – Stay Connected Without the Shock

Wave goodbye to expensive roaming! These international eSIM data plans are reliable worldwide. Download the app, follow the steps (unlocked phone required-ask your carrier to unlock if needed). My top picks:

Food & Culinary Experiences – The Heart of Every Trip

Nothing makes a destination unforgettable like its food! These apps focus on authentic local cuisine, family-run spots, small-group cooking classes, and senior-friendly guided food walks:

Devour Tours Making every bite on your trip a flavor to remember. Relaxed small groups, with guides that help you avoid the tourist traps and uncover the local hidden gems. Throughout Europe and the U.S.

Eating Europe: From local food markets to the newest trendy restaurants, experience your destination in all it’s delicious glory!

Guides & Tours – For Wandering or Seeing It All

Some days I just want to stroll slowly and soak it in… other days I’m ready to see highlights. These make both easy:

Big Bus Tours: Relaxed hop-on-off city tours.

GetYourGuide: So many wonderful options, easy booking. Many small bus tours that are senior friendly.

Shore Excursions Group: Experts on cruise excursions. More affordable than the cruise lines and they have a return-to-ship guarantee.

Viator: Huge selection of senior-paced tours and activities.

Travel Insurance & Safety – Peace of Mind Matters Most

  1. Allianz Travel — Strong coverage and well-known for pre-existing waivers
  2. Generali InsuranceGreat option, affordable and no extra charges for pre-existing conditions.
  3. World Nomads (great flexibility)

Pro Tip: Most insurance companies have “cancel for any reason”, but it comes at an extra cost. You might consider this if there is a possibility you might have to cancel your trip. Hopefully that’s not the case. You do not get the insurance cost back though.

Check your credit cards. Most have travel insurance but not as extensive as a individual policy. Although it might not cover your trip, they may cover things like lost luggage and rentacar insurance.

Luggage Storage – Explore Without the Weight

Long layover? Store your bags safely and enjoy the city!

  1. LuggageHero — Super convenient and secure
  2. Bounce – Another great option to store your luggage if you want to explore your location while waiting for a flight.

Transportation – Getting There & Around Comfortably

  1. Trainline : Easy European train tickets
  2.  Eurailrail: London to Paris (and beyond) in style
  3. Amtrak : Lovely scenic rides across the US
  4. Rome2Rio: Another great website to plan your trip. It’s fun to see how to get from A to B on planes, trains and automobiles. It also shows you the prices, so super helpful for budgeting purposes.

These resources will make your travel planning easy breezy! Ready to book? Drop me a comment or send me a message, I’d love to hear about your next dream trip.

Must have Apps and Tech for Easy Travel

Apps make everything smoother. Download them at home, sign up and familiarize yourself with them before your trip. When cruising, always download the cruise lines app before you board. They usually start working about 2 weeks before the cruise. You’ll be able to see the daily schedules, entertainment and book reservations for specialty dining, spa treatments and other fun things onboard the ship

Google Maps for navigation. Use it on offline mode when you don’t have access to WIFI

XE Currency Converter for real-time rates, avoiding rip-offs.

Citymapper for urban transport in big cities—shows bus times and accessibility.

For language barriers, Google Translate—speak into it for instant help. Great for “essential language apps for boomer travelers.”

Tripit: Organizes your travel itineraries, flights and confirmations in one place.

WhatsApp: The universal standard for communication in Europe. Almost every hotel, tour operator, and local host will use it instead of SMS.

Maps.me : provides offline maps of the whole world. Unlike Google Maps, once Maps.me has been downloaded you will no longer need the internet for routes for cars, public transport, biking and walking, including trails. Maps.me also displays hotels, attractions and nearby places to eat… all offline!

Rome2Rio: Great way to see the best travel options for your trip and find the best way possible to get to your destination. Sometimes you can travel by bus to a nearby site you want to visit, Rome2Rio is great for this.

Happy travels! Evie
