Getting Around Houston as a First-Time Visitor
Houston is big. Locals semi-joke about driving for an hour and still be in Houston. The highway system is built around three major “loops” and major freeways called the “spokes”. And to make it more confusing, they all have several different names. Downtown is “inside the loop”, meaning Loop 610.
Although there are walkable areas around Houston, you definitely will need a car to get around. The distances are pretty massive and the weather – high heat and humidity in the summer and the rainy season can put a damper on your trip.
There are areas where you can go car-free. Downtown and The Medical Center have access to the MetroRail and bus service around town. One-way fares range from $1.25 – $4.50, depending on the distance. Basically, inside the loop you can get light rail service but venturing outside the loop you’ll need a car or a rideshare like Uber and Lyft.
Day 1 – Explore Downtown Houston
Downtown Houston is about 30-40 minute drive from George W. Bush International Airport (IAH). If you’ve booked a hotel in Downtown Houston, start your Houston adventure at Discovery Green.
Discovery Green – Houston
This 12 acre urban park located in the heart of downtown Houston features a 1 acre lake used for kayaking, a roller skating rink, public art and manicured green lawns. It’s a great place to unwind after a long flight.
If you have time to wander around, check out the many great murals created by local artists. You’ll come across Minute Maid Park, where The Astros hold their games, the Houston Aquarium and Market Square Park.
There are great restaurants downtown open for lunch and dinner.
Downtown is also home to many quirky and vintage shops as well as live music venues. The House of Blues is a great place for live music and southern inspired cuisine.

Day 2 Houston Itinerary – Visit Space Center Houston
No visit is complete without experiencing Space Center Houston. If you’re driving from downtown Houston, it’ll take you about 30 minutes. If you don’t have a car, you can take the line 247 bus from Pierce St.at Fannin and arrive at park and ride. It takes about 40 minutes and costs around $15.00 each way. Plan to spend most of your day here.

Houston’s Museum District is one of the best in the country. It features 19 museums, parks and attractions. Located just south of downtown, it’s a walkable, tree-lined neighborhood where you can easily spend a whole day.
The attractions are close together, making this an easy sightseeing day. If you don’t have a lot of time, try and go to these top museums:

Museum of Fine Arts
One of the largest arts museum in the U.S., the Museum of Fine Arts houses over 70,000 works of art. Art lovers can easily spend several hours here. Permanent collections include asian collection, european masters, american art and modern works. The MFAH also hosts temporary exhibits from around the world. Parking is available and easily accessible. The sculpture garden is also a wonderful outdoor space to visit. Weekdays are less crowded and on thursdays they offer free admissions. Hermann Park
If you have time, try to visit The Japanese Garden in Hermann Park. A serene space designed by reknown Japanese landscape architect Ken Nakajima.

Day 4: Shopping, Parks and Local Favorites
The Galleria
Even if shopping isn’t your priority, The Galleria is worth visiting. Inside you’ll find the best Luxury brands, Department stores, great restaurants and an ice skating rink that’s open to everyone. There’s not a lot of sitting space, so make sure to bring your walking shoes. This area is called Uptown, home to many luxury hotels, and residential areas such as River Oaks, where Terms of Endearment, with Jack Nicholson was filmed. The Waterwall is just a few blocks south of the Galleria.
4 days in Houston is really not enough time to see all the great parks, neighborhoods and shopping areas. If you have a little extra time, try to go to Buffalo Bayou Park. This scenic park offers beautiful skyline views and easy walking trails. You can also take a kayak ride down Buffalo Bayou and see thousands of mexican free-tailed bats flying out from the Waugh Drive Bridge at dusk.
Best Time to Visit Houston
I’m sure you’ve heard how brutal Texas summers are, but unless you’re planning to be outside all day long, that shouldn’t be a problem. There’s A/C everywhere! As a matter of fact, make sure to bring light cardigans in case you get chilly indoors.
The most pleasant and comfortable months of the year are March, April, October, November and even early December is still in the high 60s. The weather is in the high 60’s, low 70’s and pleasantly dryish.
Is Houston Worth Visiting?
I’ve lived in Houston for over 20 years and I still love it here. Houston combines fascinating history, incredible food, outstanding museums, great music venues and live shows. The Houston Symphony and the Houston Ballet are also great experiences.
