Hello, fellow adventurers! I’m Evie from Wander with Evie, your go-to travel blog for seniors who want to explore the world with comfort, joy, and a touch of wonder. If you’ve been dreaming of towering glaciers, majestic whales, and rugged Alaskan landscapes, an Alaska cruise might just be the perfect next chapter in your travel story.
In this comprehensive guide, we’ll dive into the best Alaska cruise excursions tailored for travelers over 55. Whether you prefer gentle scenic rides, wildlife viewing from comfortable boats, or light walks with breathtaking views, Alaska offers something magical for every pace and preference. Let’s explore why Alaska is ideal for senior travelers and uncover the top excursions that will create memories to last a lifetime.
Why Alaska Cruises Are Perfect for Seniors
Alaska cruises stand out as one of the most accessible and rewarding ways for seniors to experience the Last Frontier. Many itineraries, especially Inside Passage routes, feature calm waters, stunning scenery from the ship’s deck, and ports with a mix of easy and moderate activities.
Cruise lines like Holland America and Princess are particularly popular with mature travelers, offering excellent accessibility features, enrichment programs, and a relaxed atmosphere. You can enjoy world-class dining, spacious staterooms, and onboard lectures about Alaska’s history and wildlife without overexerting yourself.
Key benefits for seniors:
- Scenic cruising days let you soak in views from a comfortable lounge chair.
- Many excursions accommodate varying mobility levels.
- Ports are often walkable or offer shuttle services.
- Wildlife sightings (bears, eagles, whales) happen with minimal physical effort.
Packing tip: Layer up with moisture-wicking base layers, a warm fleece, waterproof jacket, comfortable walking shoes, binoculars, and medications for motion sensitivity if needed. Alaska’s weather can change quickly, even in summer!
I booked my excursions through the Shore Excursion Group. They are the same excursions the cruise line sells, they’re very reliable, often lower priced, and they have a guaranteed return to ship.
A disclaimer here: These are the excursions I did on several cruises to Alaska, they can vary or be discontinued, depending on the season. There are more of course, some of them much more expensive, like the helicopter ride around the glaciers. The prices vary anywhere from $80.00 to $180.00 for most of them.
Top Ports and the Best Alaska Cruise Excursions
Most Alaska cruises visit ports like Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, and sometimes Sitka or Icy Strait Point. Here are standout senior-friendly excursions in each.

Ketchikan: Misty Fjords and Cultural Delights
Ketchikan, known as Alaska’s “First City,” greets you with colorful waterfront buildings and rich Native Alaskan heritage. It’s a great starting point for gentle adventures.
Top Recommendation: Bering Sea Crab Fishermen’s Tour This entertaining and educational boat tour lets you experience the life of commercial crab fishermen. Watch as the crew pulls up pots and learn about Alaska’s fishing industry. You will not go out in the open sea, rather stay in the calm waters of the Inside Passage. It’s low impact, with seating available, and often includes close-up views of wildlife.
The excursion lasts around 3 hours and is rated as “Easy” on the activity level. You will have plenty of time to come back and visit the Saxman Native Village and see the Totem Collection and the Historic Creek Street, Ketchikan’s former red-light district.
Ketchikan Zodiac Expedition If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, hop aboard an inflatable zodiac boat and sail through the Tongass Narrows. A local guide will help you navigate through the Alaskan waters and immerse yourself in the rugged beauty of Alaska. This excursion lasts 3 hours and has an activity level of “moderate”. You’ll be able to watch humpback whales and other wildlife in their natural habitat.
Lumberjack Show A fun, seated theater-style experience with humorous competitions. It’s a lighthearted way to learn about Alaska’s logging history without any walking required.
These excursions make Ketchikan one of the easiest ports for seniors while delivering authentic Alaskan flavor.

Juneau: Glaciers, Whales, and Wildlife Wonders
Alaska’s capital is packed with natural beauty and ranks high for senior travelers.
Best Overall: Whale Watching and Mendenhall Glacier Combo Tour. One of the best Alaska cruise excursions I’ve taken. The boats are comfortable, and it can be a little chilly. It is so amazing to see humpback whales breach and feed. Many tours include binoculars and narration. Pair it with a visit to Mendenhall Glacier via bus or short paved paths to the visitor center. The center has excellent viewing areas, exhibits, and places to sit while admiring the glacier and Nugget Falls.
Alaska Gold Panning & Salmon Feast Another fun excursion where you’ll be driven to the Last Chance Basin and follow the footsteps of prospectors searching for gold more than 100 years ago. You are free to take all the gold you can find! Finalize the excursion with a delicious meal of Alaskan-caught wild salmon grilled over the open fire.
Mt. Roberts Tramway A quick, accessible ride up the mountain for panoramic views. At the top, enjoy light trails or just relax at the visitor center.
You’ll have plenty of time to do two excursions in Juneau. If you have time, stop by Tracy’s King Crab Shack, just a few steps from the port. Best crab legs I’ve ever had!

Skagway: Historic Trains and Gold Rush Charm
Skagway’s Gold Rush history comes alive against a backdrop of steep mountains.
Iconic Choice: White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad This is a must-do for many. The historic train climbs through dramatic landscapes, crossing bridges and offering views of waterfalls and glaciers. It’s entirely seated, narrated, and one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world. Book early as it’s popular. Important: All guests 16 and older are required to present an original passport, visas and permanent resident cards when crossing the Canadian Border. Check with the Canadian consulate if you plan to do this excursion.
Other Options:
- Easy town exploration or horse-drawn carriage rides for a gentle pace.
- Scenic drives or light gold panning experiences.
The train ride perfectly captures Alaska’s rugged beauty without strenuous activity.

Additional Highlights: Glacier Bay and Beyond
If your itinerary includes Glacier Bay National Park, treat it as a highlight. View massive tidewater glaciers calving from the ship’s deck.
In Sitka or Icy Strait Point, look for whale-watching or wildlife tours. Many are boat-based and senior-friendly.
Tips for Choosing and Booking the Best Alaska Cruise Excursions
- Match to Your Mobility: Look for “easy” or “moderate” ratings. Many operators offer wheelchair-accessible options or modified tours.
- Book Through the Cruise Line or Independently? Ship excursions guarantee return-to-ship timing. Independent options (via local operators) can be more affordable and flexible. I’ve linked my favorite operator here: Shore Excursions Group.
- Best Time to Cruise: May-September offers milder weather. Shoulder seasons (May or September) often have fewer crowds and good senior discounts.
- Health and Comfort: Consult your doctor, consider travel insurance, and stay hydrated. Many tours provide snacks and rest stops.
- Wildlife and Photography: Bring a good camera or phone with zoom. Binoculars enhance whale and bear spotting.
- Budgeting: Expect $100–$400+ per person for premium excursions. Trains and boat tours are often mid-range.
Onboard Enjoyment and Senior Cruise Tips
Beyond excursions, embrace ship life. Attend naturalist talks, enjoy spa time, or watch glaciers from the deck with a warm drink. Many lines cater to seniors with slower-paced activities and accessible facilities.
Consider a cruise + land tour extension for Denali if you want more interior Alaska experiences, train travel is comfortable and scenic.
Final Thoughts: Your Alaskan Adventure Awaits
An Alaska cruise offers a perfect blend of comfort and awe-inspiring discovery. The best Alaska cruise excursion, from whale watching in Juneau to the White Pass train in Skagway, deliver memories without overwhelming physical demands. Whether it’s your first cruise or your tenth adventure, Alaska has a way of rejuvenating the spirit.
As always, I recommend travel insurance. Here are my personal recommendations : Best Travel Insurance for Seniors
If you’re tired of paying overprices WI-FI on the cruise, I’ve personally used and recommend GigSky. It works great on the open ocean, the ports and onboard the ship.
At Wander with Evie, I believe travel in our golden years should be fulfilling and joyful. Pack your sense of wonder, choose excursions that match your energy, and get ready to fall in love with the Great Land.
Safe Travels! Evie
